Happy birthday to one of my heroes; Christa McAuliffe (9-2-1948 / 1-28-1986). Aside from being chosen as the winner of the 1985 National Teacher in Space Project, she was born in Boston Massachusetts and lived in my home state of New Hampshire where she taught at Concord High School.

Of course we all know how this story ended on January 28, 1986, 48,000ft in the air and 73 seconds into flight onboard STS-51-L Space Shuttle Challenger. Today her legacy lives on in the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord NH as well as in the McAuliffe Exhibit in the Henry Whittemore Library at Framingham State University, Framingham MA, where she went to college. In 2004 she was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. There is also an asteroid bearing her name – 3352 McAuliffe as well as 2 craters that also bear her name. One is on the Moon and one on Venus which was named by the Russians.

Please take a moment to remember her and her six crewmates of STS 51-L today.
