VIRGIN GALACTIC & SPACESHIPTWO COMPLETE SECOND SUCCESSFUL POWERED FLIGHT.
This past Thursday, September 5th 2013 at approximately 0800 local time, the WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) carrier aircraft piloted by Dave Mackay & Mike Alsbury lifted off from the Mojave Air & Space Port in California carrying SpaceShipTwo (SS2). Once the aircrafts reached 46,000 feet SpaceShipTwo was detached from WK2 and pilots Mark Stucky and Clint Nichols fired the engine for a 20 second burn. The flight took them to mach 1.43 at al altitude of 69,000 feet before landing safely back at Mojave at 0925 local time.
The test was not meant for the sole purpose of getting higher and faster but instead it was primarily to test the feather mechanism which allows for a smooth descent and aids the slowing of the spacecraft on descent using the laws of physics to their benefit.
This brings Virgin Galactic one step closer to safe, space tourism and I for one am exited to be living in these times. Everywhere we look it seems, space is becoming popular once again……spread the word!
