USING THE MOON TO YOUR ADVANTAGE: REMAKE OF A CASSIC!
Photo By: Philipp Schmidli (CLICK for full size as well as all links below).
To illustrate the moon illusion further here’s how you can use it and in fact alter it to your advantage in photography. Take this incredible shot from Swiss photographer, Philipp Schmidli who earlier created a similar photo. Inspired by all of the positive feedback from it he decided to attempt to remake the classic ET movie photo (Only real). His equipment and settings were a Cannon 1DX DSLR with an 800mm f5.6L IS lens with a 2X teleconverter for a massive 1600 total focal length. He calculated where exactly the moon would be rising, had his subject conduct a few test jumps and they waited for the moment which as you can see was captured brilliantly.
This is another way of using foreground objects to make the moon look larger that it really is. The key here is distance; the further you are from your subject, the more you have to zoom in and the larger the moon in the background becomes in the photo. It’s all size, distance and angles……and of course, money to afford the equipment!!!
