On November 9, 1967 at 1200 UTC (0700 EST) a legend roared to life and took flight for the 1st time as part of Apollo 4 (AS-501). The massive Saturn V Moon Rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Launch Complex 39-A (LC39-A) in an unmanned “all-up” test flight to demonstrate its structural and thermal integrity as well as the compatibility of the launch vehicle with the spacecraft and all stages were fully functional. The entire mission lasted 8 hours and 36 minutes but more importantly injected an insatiable enthusiasm into the program that had suffered the loss of Apollo 1 (AS-204) earlier that year.

As the rocket lifted off, Walter Cronkite who was reporting live from Launch Control next to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) was overwhelmed by the experience. Even at more than three miles away the sound shook the building, knocked ceiling tiles down and he, with many others placed their hands against the windows to attempt to feel the massive vibrations. Remember, this was pre-sound suppression water system. Video containing the audio to this moment is below.
