It was on this day; November 9th 1934 that a legend was born. Carl Sagan, was an Astronomer, Astrophysicist, Cosmologist, Professor of Astronomy at Cornell University and likely above all, the greatest science communicator in history. Author and editor of more than 20 books, publisher of more than 600 scientific papers, he stepped into mainstream America with the 13 part hit television series “COSMOS: A Personal Voyage” and the book COSMOS that followed. Everyone needs a full size COSMOS book in my opinion. His novel “Contact” was turned into a hit 1997 film starring Jodie Foster.
He is equally as famous was his part in coining the phrase “Pale Blue Dot” that he chose represent Earth in the 1990 photo taken of Earth by the Voyager 1 probe from almost 4 billion miles away as well as for creating the Pioneer plaque and Voyager Golden Records which are still traveling through space at this very moment.
I’m going to resist going on for an hour about Sagan; we all know who he is and we all know what he means to science and his legacy will be revered for decades and probably centuries to come. Take a moment today to watch some of the videos below, pull out an old book, watch Cosmos or Contact or just think of your favorite Carl Sagan moments……..
