HAPPY BIRTHDAY to William “Bill” Sanford Nye, born on November 27, 1955 to Jacqueline Jenkins who was a WWII code breaker and Edwin “Ned” Darby Nye who was also a WWII veteran. I mean seriously, do I even have to write anything about this guy?
A scientist, engineer, actor, stand-up comedian, author, inventor and athlete; Bill Nye was a man destined to be in the public’s eye. Thankfully for us, he chose to dedicate his life to the pursuit of science and promotion of it to the world.
After graduating from Cornell University with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1977, (Where one of his professors was Carl Sagan); he began his career as a Boeing engineer where he invented a hydraulic pressure resonance suppressor “Quinke Tube” which is still in use onboard 747’s today. From 1993 to 1998 we knew him as “The Science Guy” and in the last couple years he has been the Executive Director of the Planetary Society. A non-profit group founded by Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray and Louis Friedman in 1980 whose mission is a dedication to exploration of the solar system, near Earth objects as well as the search for extraterrestrial life.
One thing most people don’t know about Bill Nye is that he has two sundials on Mars. Back in 1998 Bill was invited to a meeting at Cornell University concerning the Spirit & Opportunity mission to Mars. One look at the photometric calibration targets he said “You guys, we’ve got to turn the photometric calibration target into a Sundial.” As a prisoner of war, Ned Nye (Bills Dad) became fascinated with sundials as he was without power of any kind for almost four years (44 months). On the sides of the sundials it reads, “To those who visit here, we wish a safe journey and the joy of discovery.”
Aside from that, he has literally been on too many television shows, movies, magazines, books etc. for me to even attempt to round up………
THANK YOU BILL NYE!!! For inspiring a generation and beyond; HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
