On December 20, 2013 at Miami Homestead Raceway, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, known as DARPA will be kicking off the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC). The challenge is based on eight events; Vehicle, Terrain, Ladder, Debris, Door, Wall, Valve and Hose. The challenge is to provide a baseline on the current state of robotics. Though 17 teams from around the world will be competing DARPA will determine which will continue on to the 2014 finals.
Just a few of the competitors include the quite Terminator-like ATLAS Robot which is a Pentagon funded dream child out of Boston Dynamics (Link below). Another is the RoboSimian which is built by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in partnership with Caltech. One of the frontrunners is the robot in the photo posted. It’s a NASA Johnson Space Center humanoid named Valkyrie (NOT the XB-15 Valkyrie). It also goes by “R5” or “Val” for short. It weighs in at 286 lbs. and stands 74” inches or 6 ft. 2 in. in height. Designed with life-saving ability, especially in disaster mitigation situations in mind; designers look forward to the day when this robot or future models like it go to Mars to join humans in exploratory teams.
If you’re in the Miami/South Florida area get down there and check it out…….you can get your picture taken with the robots too! I put the spectator link below……
