NASA’s Morpheus Lander will conduct Free Flight 8 (FF8) and it’s scheduled to commence on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at 1545 UTC (1045 EST or 0745 PST) at NASA Kennedy Space Center out at Hazard Field at the north end of the former space shuttle runway. The Morpheus Lander is a vertical take-off and landing vehicle that in the future will be able to land more than 1000lbs. on the surface of the Moon, Mars and possibly beyond to include the landing of astronauts. Morpheus is equipped with the Autonomous Landing and Hazard Avoidance Technology (ALHAT) which will navigate the vehicle upon automated planetary decent.
Free Flight 8 (FF8) objectives are to ascend to an altitude of 142 m (465.8 ft.), move down range a predicted 193 m (636.4 ft.), 17 m (55.7 ft.) divert then and descend onto the marked landing area inside Hazard Field. The entire test should take approximately 82 seconds.
