Ok, if you’re looking at this image and you’re from Alabama you may be ready to question my integrity as this is clearly not Alabama. So there may be a hitch as this is actually the “Alabama Hills” which is located in Tuttle Creek Canyon in the Eastern Sierras, California. If you ever get the opportunity to see the night sky from the dark desert skies in the southwest United States please do so. No, your human eyes won’t be able to see the night sky in quite this fashion but spotting the Milky Way will be no problem. What very well may be a problem (as I experienced personally) is when you go from heavily light polluted skies to a dark sky site, you can’t find the constellations! Well you can, it just takes much more work as your familiar narrow star field becomes a glistening sea of light…….pretty amazing really.
I hope you enjoy this image and go check out Royce’s pages as he’s (unlike me) clearly one of the most knowledgeable night sky photographers out there and (like me), truly enjoys sharing as much information as he can as well as promoting the works of others. Being a night sky lover my entire life and understanding the hours upon hours of time it takes as well as the financial burden incurred to produce these images for us I have a real sense of pride in the night sky community and try to get their work out there as often as possible.
