“Often when one is asleep, there is something in consciousness which declares that what then presents itself; is but a dream.” – Aristotle
This incredible dream-like creation from Mike Taylor evokes so many emotions, even at first glance. You can almost feel yourself in this image, standing in the dirt roadway taking in the vast feeling of seclusion and solitude. Summer has met its end and fall has moved in. Those humid September nights have given way to the chill of November. Cool wind from a recently past rain shower presents itself on your face, cloud cover has given way to crystal clear skies leaving only the universe above you.
The Milky Way stretches across the horizon as if it were those very storm clouds illuminated by the flashes of lightning when in fact its clouds will forever remain an impossible distance no matter how long you chase them; and they’re lit not by the flash of a bolt, but by the energy of a hundred billion Suns.
You can smell the grass and hear the wind rolling across it as you pull the sleeves of your hoodie down over your hands. The tree in the distance already bare, its branches dancing to the tempo of the breeze. As you begin to walk, you choose between the wet grass or the lightly mudded road which no one has passed since you’ve been there.
The rest of this story is yours; let your lucidity take you the rest of the way. What do you feel, what are your thoughts, why are you here, where did you come from and where are you going? Interestingly, it’s those very questions that, no matter how often you answer them, always remain.
You may be interested to know that this image has a bit of a twist. The sky you see was imaged in Goblin Valley State Park, Utah. The tree was imaged near Ellsworth ME and the foreground landscape was imaged in Near Farmington ME. No vehicle or amount of money can get you here…..you can never visit this location. So if you ever find yourself here, do your best to make sure you don’t awaken too soon and be sure to warn others because you will surely be talking in your sleep……
