China to Launch Long March 3B w’ BeiDou Navigation Satellites

Launch Alert! Thursday, March 29, 2018 at TBD EDT (TBD UTC) a China National Space Administration (CNSA), heavy lift Long March 3B with YZ-1 4th stage will be launching from Launch Complex 2 or 3 (LC-2 or 3) at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, Sichuan, China to deliver two BeiDou navigation satellites (BeiDou-3MEO5 (BeiDou-30) and the BeiDou-3MEO6 (BeiDou-31) satellites) into orbit.

The BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) is named after “BeiDou” which is basically the Big Dipper asterism.  The Dipper even appears on the system’s logo.

Payload Fairing: The Long March 3B payload fairing is a two-shell, 9.56 m (31.3 ft.) long, 4 m (13 ft.) diameter protective enclosure that protects the spacecraft until it is high enough to be safe from atmospheric turbulence where it is then pyrotechnically jettisoned.
